Review: Study of Philippians

For those of you who missed these few weeks, shame on you. *pause* Kidding kidding. There weren’t many that came but each of us learnt a whole lot of stuff as Beatrice conducted the study for each chapter that went on for 4 weeks. Because of the amazing stuff we’ve learnt, this is a summary or an overall report about the book of Philippians. There’s just so much to learn that some of us think that we should share it with ALL the CF-ers. What’s more important, our theme verse is a part of this! If you have 10-15 minutes to spare, do read through the 4 chapters of Philippians and I pray that God will speak to you in His own special and personal way. It’s a very easy book to understand unlike Shakespeare, so do give this a shot!.

We first started with viewing the letter as a whole. Beatrice told us to read certain passages of the bible and to pick out the important events that took place in Philippi and the characteristics of Paul. We read the book once through and had an open discussion. An important tip while reading; read the letter as if it were to you, in a personal manner.

For the next 3 weeks, we dissected chapters 1-4. Right from the beginning, we learnt that Paul was a personal person. He writes his letter saying that he prays for EACH of the members of the Philippian church. Wouldn’t you want to be remembered by your loved ones in their prayers? Paul was that sort of guy. The members of the church were equally important to him. He always referred to them as brothers, partners, yokefellows and dear friends. They were the reason he wrote the letters, they were the reason he chose to live. If you read the later part of chapter 1, Paul actually had a dilemma between going to be with the Lord and staying alive. He chose the latter because he knew his job and sacrifice for the Philippian church was not over. All the struggles and tribulations he faced were shared with the Philippians in this chapter.

Throughout the letter, Paul kept repeating the word “Rejoice!”. Mind you, he was in prison when he was writing this. Even so, Paul wrote words of encouragement to the people he loved and long for. He told them to stand firm and press on, to keep on running a race as if to reach the prize up ahead. At that time, the church of Philippi was in a mess, full of complaining and anxious members, pride, disunity and feelings of hopelessness.

One thing you will notice if you read Philippians is that Paul used many examples. He talked about Timothy, who placed others before him as an example of humility; Epaphroditus, who took care of Paul’s needs although the church was worried about him being a burden to Paul when he fell sick. Paul’s own life and personal experiences and revelations were also used as examples to follow in addition to the primary example of Christ Himself.

In Chapter 3, Paul talks about confidence in the flesh versus confidence in God. He wrote to his people about not putting their pride and confidence on earthly things. Using himself as an example, Paul portrays the type of trust one should have in God instead of earthly achievements. He himself was a religious leader legalistically faultless and a renowned person in the Jewish society. Yet he considered them all irrelevant for the sake of Christ. Sounds applicable don’t you think? It doesn’t really matter where or how u serve in church or how well you do it because in the end, it is all about the grace of God which redeems us and not our achievements and actions.

At the end of the study, each of us came up with our own title for this book if it were not called Philippians. It was a good journey that we all had. We threw out questions, were skeptical over certain issues, and had differing points of view and debates over the principles, context and lessons in this book. At the end of it all, the main lesson that we all took home from this letter was about standing firm in the Lord and pressing on no matter what the circumstances. Beatrice did a wonderful job trying to answer all our questions and explaining concepts in a modern and easy-to-grasp manner whilst providing historical background and meanings of words to better help us understand the book. As she answered all our questions, I’m sure she will answer yours as well. Feel free to approach her for any insights and questions you have as you explore the book of Philippians for yourself.

Study on the Book of Philippians

Hey there :)

We've been studying the book of Jonah and it has been eye opening.

Last week, questions like these were discussed (see if you could answer them):

1. Why did Jonah run knowing that God is everywhere?

2. How could Jonah fall asleep in the midst of the storm, when the ship was about to break???

3. Why did the sailors asked Jonah to call on his God and why did they asked "duh" (weird) questions?

4. How did Jonah knew that the sea would be calm if the sailors threw him into the sea?

5. Why did God choose a fish to swallow Jonah... why not other form of transportation???

Most important question (to me): Like Jonah, what are WE running from???

One thing that we've realized is that there's so much to learn from Jonah and he's as human as we are.

How often do you get to watch a movie in college?
Well, here's your opportunity!

Okay, so what about the movie you may ask? This movie is produced locally and directed by Chew Cheng En, who felt God's calling to start producing movies. A bruised Reed is about a young man who had financial issues, who needed a big sum of money to save his friend. Desperately, he had planned to steal money from a disabled home. However, things did not go as he had planned; in fact, it became a turning point of his life. The trailer below can help you understand better :)

......of which 40% will go into the disabled home's fund.

Okay, so it's in Mandarin (forgot to tell you earlier)! But so what... there are English Subtitles :) and I bet you can read! Understandable and reliable.

I have personally watched it and have learned many things from the movie. Let me just share one. You see, we often separate ourselves from the weak (or disabled), thinking that we are stronger, more perfect. Well, physically maybe, but inside us, we are no different, having disabilities within us too, yes, not perfect AT ALL. One thing that we've got to admit that in one way or another, whether disabled or not, we all need Jesus, simply because because of Him, we are made perfect.

This is the one of the many of which I have learned. How bout you? Wanna learn something life changing? Really, you won't look at the disabled people the same way anymore after watching this.

3 reasons why you shouldn't let this movie pass you by:
1. It WILL be life changing.
2. You get to watch a movie and help the disabled people at the same time (how cool is that?)
3. You can't get this movie anywhere else (unless GSC or TGV decides to screen it)

This whole week is gonna be a busy week for the CF and we need your HELP!
It'll be absolutely, fabulously great if you can help us out this week!

1) There's gonna be a Movie Screening on the 21st of January and we need your help to sell tickets this week. The committee is trying to organize some time this week to set up ticketing booths! We need your help to sell them! Will give you more details if you're willing to help out.

2) There's gonna be a CLUB & SOCIETIES day on the 14th of January (this Wednesday). It's also known as clubs recruitment day. We need your help in being there, helping us to set up and come introduce CF to those who are new/old in HELP. It's gonna be held in Wisma HELP DSA LEVEL 5 @ 11.30 - 2pm! If you wanna help out, do let us know, we'll give you more details too!

3) As you already know (or now know), there's gonna be a welcome party this Friday. Food, is what we all need! You there!! Happy New Year!

I can't believe how time just flew by just like that. It WAS 2008, NOW 2009! Nevertheless, it's a new year already. Let's all start the New Year right, aightz? Let's all start this year by keeping our eyes on Him and surrendering all our plans to Him. That's because He knows what's best for you.

Anyway, this post is gonna be a short one with just a couple of announcements :)

1. CF is officially starting on the 16th of January (Friday) in KPD E, Level 1, LH 1.1 @ 12.30-2pm. We're gonna kick start this year's CF with a party, welcoming both newbies and oldies! Bring yourself & Invite friends!!

2. Our dear A-Levels students are having their exams within these few days & weeks. For all A-levels students out there, I know you're all drowning and flooding your heads with your notes or textbooks, remember to seek Him first too, okay?! For those who are still in your new year/holiday mood, let's all not be selfish & support them in prayer!!

Till then, see you on the 16th!!

The Ceifa Arts Company is in town and they are coming to our CF this Friday!

CEIFA is a Brazilian Portuguese name which means Harvest. The word that gave birth to the name is John 4:35b I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! THEY ARE RIPE FOR THE HARVEST (CEIFA)

Correction: The meeting is not at the Lower Foyer, Main Block but KPD E LH 1.1

A little info on CEIFA:
The Ceifa Arts Company was started in Brazil in 1988 under Marisa Santos, Raudson and Silvana Reis through the inspiration of FEET Ministry from YWAM Hong Kong. Since then hundreds of teams has ministered through The Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and The Pacific. Ceifa teams have reached out to serve people from all ages (especially the youth) through anointed Circus, Music, Dance, Dramas and other creativity. They have proclaimed God's love in a wide variety of national and international outreaches and events.

What is the Prosperity Gospel about actually?

A brief explanation: It is the teaching that an authentic religious belief and behaviour in a person will result in their material prosperity. That is, the doctrine holds that material prosperity, particularly financial prosperity and success in business and personal life, is to be expected as external evidence of God's favor. (Wikipedia)

So should we believe in it, just be okay with it, or be against it?

Before we make that decision, we have to know what is it really about, isn't it?

That is why we have Ps. Michael William to come talk to us about the Prosperity Gospel!=)

For the past 3 weeks we have learnt about personal and corporate worship.

So, how do we finally end the month based on our theme, Worship?
(Although, it never really ends because we will continue to learn about it, right?

Yup, we are having High Praise!

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4: 23-24

So it is important that we bring our hearts and focus on Him!

Oooh, we are going to have a greaaattt time! Aren't you excited?

Okay, let's focus people.

Anyway, the theme for this month is Worship!

This week we are having Ps. Alex Tan to speak on personal worship between you and God.

Scripture, prayer, reflection and service are all elements of personal worship. But all of this, is only between you and God.

Focus on God’s presence, hear His Word, and respond to His grace.

So come come!

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Mathew 6:6

This is a short profile on our speaker this week, Ps. Rose Goh =)

Rosaleen Goh is the Youth Church Pastor of Full Gospel Assembly, Kuala Lumpur. Having graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2003, she pursued a Certificate in Youth Studies at Paradise College of Ministry, Australia, the following year. She has been involved in youth ministry for the past 11 years, and decided to go full-time in 2005. Rose (as she is affectionately known) claims that she absolutely loves her “job”! Why? Because she gets to hang out with young people - walk life, be real, laugh & cry - with them, play music, surf the internet, study the Word and do all the other exciting things that youth pastors get to do!

Rose has spoken in various camps, workshops and meetings, and enjoys challenging the young people of today about learning to live life with God. Currently pursuing her Master in Christian Ministry at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia (STM), Rose is passionate about living the best that she can for God, and her desire is to make the reality of God a surety in the lives of all the young people she comes across with.

Some other stuff about me:

Well, I’m not very gifted with height. No complaints though. I play “nerve-wracking” computer games like Text Twist, Solitaire and Tumblebugs. Enjoy things like Taboo, Boggle, volleyball, a walk by the beach, a well-planned saboh, a good cup of coffee and more! Life just rocks!

Past few weeks we've been talking about throwing off our baggages and burdens, removing our masks and coming clean before the Lord.

Last week, we realized we needed to be doggie Christians. We need to treat God as the Master, put Him at the center.

This week, we're gonna study His word. A very familiar yet refreshing psalm. You probably know it by heart. But God can speak a million different things through one psalm. So do join us as we explore Psalms 23 together. We'd love to have you there :)
